If Russia Asks for a Ceasefire, How Should Ukraine and the West Respond?
"Red Teaming" a ceasefire
Hi Everyone,
The latest episode of the podcast delves deep into the dynamics of a potential ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine. I know right now there’s very little sign that a ceasefire is a near term possibility, but that could change on the dime according to my guest today, Paul D Williams, founder of the Public International Law & Policy Group (PILPG).
He recently lead a Red Team exercise to game out the circumstances in which Russia may press for a cessation of hostilities — and the kinds of tactics and ceasefire terms that Russia would pursue.
One of the key takeaways from this episode is that words matter in peace and ceasefire agreements — and that Russia’s initial offer is likely to be disingenuous and a stalling tactic. Still, in the event of a ceasefire offer by Russia the diplomatic dynamic around the conflict would suddenly shift. Ukraine — and its backers in the west — need to prepare themselves.
